Welcome to the Lamorinda Ukulele Club!
We are ukulele fans who have been jamming together on Monday nights since 2014. Our original home was the Lamorinda Music store in Lafayette, California, and even though we now meet in the neighboring town of Walnut Creek and our members come from all over the East Bay, the name Lamorinda Ukulele Club stuck.
Most of our members started by just showing up one week and then got drawn into the fun and camaraderie that comes with playing ukulele and singing together with a great bunch of people. We hope that everyone who joins us will have the same experience!
What kind of music does the group play?
Much of our material is drawn from popular songs of the 1920s to the 1980s, but we play everything from traditional folk songs to country classics, holiday tunes, more recent songs, and more! We play songs from three sources:
The Daily Ukulele: 365 Songs For Better Living (the "Yellow Book")
The Daily Ukulele, Leap Year Edition: 366 More Songs For Better Living (the "Blue Book")
Individual chord sheets
The Yellow Book and Blue Book are available for purchase from our friends at Lamorinda Music. It's a wonderful store that is locally owned and carries a good variety of ukuleles and ukulele strings and has great in-house string technicians! Individual chord sheets are distributed to our members online before each jam.
Where and when are the jams?
Our Monday Night Ukulele Jam is held every other week at a church in Walnut Creek. Check out the Monday Jam Info page for more information.
There is also a daytime jam held from spring through fall called Music in the Park, which is held outside in a park in Walnut Creek. Check out the Park Jam Info page for more information.
Who can attend?
We are a friendly, low-key bunch who welcomes all ukulele players. Our club members live in various East Bay locations, including Walnut Creek, Lafayette, Moraga, Martinez, Danville, Oakland, Emeryville, Vallejo, San Ramon, Pleasanton, and more! Some members are beginners who know just a couple of chords, while others have played for years. We generally have around 30 - 40 ukulele players at each of our jams, so you are sure to find someone else with a similar amount of experience as you! Just come and have fun! Check out the Monday Jam Info and Park Jam Info for details.
Who leads the club? How is it funded?
We are an all-volunteer, member led group. Jen Courter and Laura Brandt lead the Monday Night Ukulele Jam program, Ellen Beierle-Keller and Barry Barron organize Music in the Park, and Dave Funk and Chris Young run our mailing list and chord sheet database.
Each person who attends our indoor jams is asked to make a small contribution, which is donated entirely to our host venue, but there is no membership fee per se. Our volunteer leaders fund the operating expenses of the club and donate their time and energy to ensure everything runs smoothly. Since we do not have a budget and depend on the generosity of our volunteers, we keep expenses as low as possible.Â
